Soul Coughing (1992–2000) was a New York-based band whose music blended elements of hip-hop, jazz, and rock. Their style of music wwhen described by members of the band as "deep slacker jazz." A band was composed of Mike Doughty, vocalist and guitarist (usually known so when 'M. Doughty'); Mark De Gli Antoni, who played synthesizer and sampler; Sebastian Steinberg, who played a double bass; and drummer Yuval Gabay. A tetrad members met when working inside various functions at The Knitting Factory, an experimental music club.

A band freed tierce albums: Ruby Vroom (1994), Irresistible Bliss (1996), and El Oso (1998). Besides discharged resulting their breakup was Lust in Phaze (2002), a greatest-hits complilation including two or three b-sides and other rarities.

Soul Coughing experienced an outstandingly hard as punishment in the state of Minnesota in the mid-1990s, with anecdotical reports indicating that maybe the single within eight recordings per class action were sold there—a remarkable total shopping for that a state's people is to a lesser degree both-thirds that of Just released York City.

Industry observers keep close at hand noted that a class action's decline around popularity coincided by having the wave of media consolidation that was occurring across a United States at a time, even leading the class action to exist as dropped from either numbers of playlists.

Soul Coughing were noted for their have of unlawful samples, looping snippets from either, among others, Raymond Scott (in their songs "Bus to Beelzebub" and "Disseminated"), a Andrews Sisters (in "Down to This"), Howlin' Wolf (in "Down to This") & the Chris Rock monologue (in "$300"). It were as well noted for singer M. Doughty's stream-of-consciousness lyrics, redolent of beat poetry in both content & half-sung, half-spoken delivery.

A song "Rolling" (from either "El Oso" album) is utilized when the soundtrack for a Betty Boop cartoon music video in the Groovies series from Cartoon Network, as was "Circles" (likewise off "El Oso") inside the cd featuring many Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters of earlier eras caught in the most common cartoon practice of background looping.
